Two dozen killed after election offices in Pakistan bombed twice the day before elections

 At least 24 people were killed and more than two dozen others injured in bomb blasts at the election offices of a political party and an independent candidate in Pakistan on Wednesday, a day before parliamentary elections.

Provincial government spokesman Jan Achakzai said the first attack took place in Pashin, a district in Balochistan province. Officials said at least 14 people were killed in the attack and the injured were being taken to a nearby hospital, some of them in critical condition.

At least 10 people were killed in another bomb blast at the election office of politician Fazlur Rehman's Jamiat Ulema Islam party in Balochistan's Kila Saifullah town, according to Akhakzai and local officials.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. Acting Interior Minister Gauhar Ijaz condemned the bombings.

The bomb blasts occurred despite thousands of police and paramilitary forces being deployed across Pakistan to ensure peace following the recent surge in terrorist attacks in the country, especially Balochistan.

The banned Balochistan Liberation Army has been behind several attacks on security forces in Balochistan, bordering Afghanistan and Iran. Last week, a separatist Balochistan Liberation Army group attacked security facilities in Balochistan's Mach district, killing six people.

Pakistan has struggled in recent years to control growing insurgency, especially in former Taliban strongholds. Militants have a presence in Balochistan and have targeted civilians in recent years.

The gas-rich Balochistan province, bordering Afghanistan and Iran, has been the site of a low-level insurgency by Baloch nationalists for more than 20 years. Baloch nationalists initially wanted a share in provincial resources, but later began a rebellion for independence.

The Pakistani Taliban and other terrorist groups also have a strong presence in the province.
