Trump trial delayed in case stemming from Special Counsel Jack Smith's Jan. 6 investigation

Former President Trump's trial stemming from special counsel Jack Smith's 2020 election interference investigation has been delayed indefinitely, Fox News has learned.

Testing was scheduled to begin on March 4 – the day before the crucial Super Tuesday primary contests, when Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Vermont vote to select the GOP nominee.

Washington DC. U.S. Federal Judge Tanya Chutkan on Friday formally canceled the March 4 hearing date, saying the court would "set a new schedule whenever the mandate returns." 

A federal appeals court is considering Trump's claim to presidential immunity from prosecution for his actions in office. A decision is expected from that court, and the Supreme Court may eventually review the issue.

The delay came after Smith asked the Supreme Court in December to rule on whether Trump can be prosecuted on charges related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

Additionally, Trump's lawyers filed a motion urging Chutkan to halt proceedings against Trump in the January 6 case while his appeal is pending.

Chutkan said in December that while the case is pending in the Supreme Court, he does not have jurisdiction over it and he put the case against the Republican 2024 front-runner on hold until the high court hears his decision. Does not determine involvement.

Smith accused the former president of conspiring to betray the United States; Conspiracy to obstruct any official proceeding; Obstructing or attempting to obstruct any official proceeding; And conspiracy against rights. The charges stem from Smith's investigation into whether Trump was involved in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, and any alleged interference in the 2020 election results.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges in August 2023.
