The September 11 attacks, often referred to as 9/11, were a series of coordinated terrorist acts that occurred on September 11, 2001 in the United States. Nineteen members of the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two of these planes crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing the towers to collapse, while the third plane crashed into Washington, D.C. The Munich massacre of 1972 is a dark chapter in Olympic history, where the spirit of global unity was brutally broken. During the Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, eight members of the Palestinian terrorist organization Black September carried out a heinous terrorist attack that shocked the entire world. They infiltrated the Olympic Village, resulting in the tragic deaths of two members of the Israeli Olympic team, while nine others were taken hostage. The operation was codenamed "Iqrit and Biram" in reference to two Palestinian Christian villages whose residents were displaced by Israeli Defense Forces during the 1948 Arab–Israeli War. Lutif Afif, also known as "Issa", served as a Black September commander and negotiator. Surprisingly, West German neo-Nazis provided logistical support to the group. The hostage crisis unfolded with demands for the release of 234 Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisons, as well as Red Army faction founders Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, who were imprisoned in West Germany.

In a tragic turn of events, West German police launched an ill-fated rescue attempt, resulting in the deaths of five of the eight members of Black September and all of the hostages. A West German policeman also lost his life in the firing. The West German government faced intense criticism for the execution of the rescue operation and its handling of the entire incident. Notably, the three surviving perpetrators, Adnan al-Gashche, Jamal al-Gashche and Mohammed Safadi, were arrested but later released the following month in a hostage exchange following the hijacking of Lufthansa Flight 615.

The 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was a deadly terrorist attack that occurred on April 15, 2013, during the annual Boston Marathon in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Two pressure cooker bombs placed near the race finish line exploded within moments of each other, resulting in a devastating and chaotic scene. The blasts killed three people and injured hundreds, many of whom suffered serious injuries, including amputations. The attack shocked the entire nation and the world, as people came together in support of the victims and the city of Boston. In the days following the bombings, a massive manhunt was conducted, resulting in the capture of two criminals, Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The Boston Marathon bombings are a reminder of the resiliency of the people of Boston and the importance of collective strength in the face of adversity, as well as the ongoing need to fight terrorism and protect innocent life.

On December 4, 1971, a terrible tragedy unfolded in Belfast, Northern Ireland, when a loyalist paramilitary group, the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF), carried out a devastating bombing of McGurk's Bar, a gathering place for Irish Catholics and nationalists.

The explosion resulted in the complete collapse of the building, taking the lives of fifteen innocent Catholic civilians, including two children, and injuring seventeen others. Sadly, this was the deadliest attack in Belfast during the Troubles.

Despite clear evidence to the contrary, British security forces initially claimed that the explosion was caused by a bomb mishandled by Irish Republican Army (IRA) members inside the pub, implying that the victims were responsible for the tragedy.
